HIRING GOLDEN HOUR

Required Environment Creation Time: 2-5 Weeks

Virtual Art Design Process

  1. Launch Meeting

This crucial initial meeting sets the foundation for the entire project. We’ll discuss the roles Golden Hour will fill, including any production crew, as well as what the client (you) will handle. We’ll cover areas such as the art department, wardrobe, and makeup artists to ensure a seamless collaboration.

  2. Design Phase

The exciting part begins here. We assist you in selecting and optimizing virtual environments. During this phase, we’ll make necessary tweaks and adjustments. Budget considerations come into play as we determine the extent of customization required. We’ll either browse the Unreal Engine marketplaces for CGI assets or decide if unique environments need to be built from scratch. At this stage, the client’s storyboard should be finalized.

  3. Pre Production

This stage closely mirrors traditional production. Set designs are finalized, styles and looks are locked in, and wardrobe fittings are conducted. It’s all about ensuring everything is ready for the shoot.

  4. Optimization

Here, we rigorously test the virtual environments. We’ll display them on our LED Volume, assessing how they appear on camera with real-time parallaxing. This phase involves evaluating colors, shaders, and textures. Key personnel such as the client, DP, DIT, virtual production manager, and virtual artists are essential. This process can be done remotely.

  5. Blocking and Staging

Often referred to as “Pre-light Day,” this phase involves much more than just lighting. We plan the movement and timing of sets, providing a loose run of the show. It’s an ideal opportunity to stage multiple environments in advance, with availability to prep and stage near the volume for easy load-in. Lighting, lenses, and angles are determined ahead of the shoot day, ensuring efficiency and minimizing downtime. Pre-light Day is an additional day rate charge, and although it is not required, it is highly recommended (especially for those who are filming virtual production for the first time).

  6. Production Day

The production phase remains largely the same as traditional methods, but with one significant advantage. By this stage, much of the post-production process is already completed, bringing the client closer to realizing their project. All traditional roles are still recommended to ensure a smooth shoot.

BUILDING YOUR OWN

With the rise of virtual production as a leading choice in filmmaking, the available resources are continuously expanding. At Golden Hour, we utilize a blend of custom CGI assets built from scratch and assets purchased from public marketplaces. We encourage our clients to explore these marketplaces and identify any environments or virtual assets that capture their vision. Utilizing pre-built assets can significantly reduce costs compared to creating new environments from scratch.

For clients who wish to bring their own Unreal Engine environments, we offer a seamless integration process. Simply provide us with your pre-built environments prior to production, and our team will optimize them for use on our LED Volume. This ensures your production runs smoothly and efficiently, leveraging the full potential of virtual production technology.

Pre-light Day

Why is Pre-light Day important?

Golden Hour clients value having a Pre-light Day because it often serves as their first hands-on experience with virtual production. While this day isn’t mandatory, it plays a crucial stage that provides an opportunity to understand the basics of virtual production, adjust lighting, angles, and logistics before the main production days. It ensures that everything runs smoothly when clients are present, giving them confidence in the process and allowing for any necessary tweaks. By addressing potential issues and fine-tuning setups in advance, you are setting yourself up to have a seamless and efficient production, ensuring your project is executed flawlessly from start to finish.

What is typically done during Pre-light Day?

  • Setup and Calibration — The LED Volume is turned on and all technical equipment is set up and calibrated. This includes adjusting the screens, camera tracking systems, and ensuring all technology is functioning correctly.

  • Scene Layout and Movements — Plan and arrange the movement and positioning of sets and actors within the virtual environments. Determine the transitions between different scenes, especially for multi-environment shoots.

  • Lighting Adjustments — Fine-tune both virtual and physical lighting setups to match the desired look. This involves adjusting light sources, shadows, and reflections to ensure they appear natural and cohesive with the virtual environment.

  • Camera Angles and Lenses — Work with the director of photography (DP) to determine the best camera angles and lenses for each shot. Test and adjust to ensure the virtual environment looks optimal on camera.

  • Technical Rehearsals — Conduct technical run-throughs to test the integration of live-action elements with virtual environments. Check synchronization, parallax effects, and real-time rendering to identify and resolve any technical issues.

  • Timing and Logistics — Plan the timing and logistics of the shoot, creating a detailed schedule. This helps to minimize downtime and ensures a smooth workflow during the actual production.

  • Crew Coordination — Ensure all departments, from lighting and camera crews to the virtual production team, are aligned. Clear communication and collaboration are essential for a successful shoot.

  • Staging and Blocking — Plan the movement and positioning of actors and/or props within the virtual environments. Pre-stage props and sets in designated areas for easy load-in and load-out during scene changes, ensuring efficient transitions and reducing downtime.

  • Final Adjustments — Make any final tweaks based on the rehearsal results and crew feedback. This ensures everything is optimized and ready for the main production days.
